It is not easy enjoying a party, especially if you are around people you don’t know. If it is a formal party and you don’t always go to such events, you might end up feeling uncomfortable. However, you can’t allow the atmosphere to prevent you from having fun. These events could go on for hours. You need to fit in and still be festive.
Don’t set high expectations
The primary reason why you feel overwhelmed during these parties is that you set high standards for yourself. You expect that you will be the life of the party or you will be the best-looking attendee. You will then feel conscious of your actions because of these expectations. You need to have realistic goals and let go of unrealistic expectations.
Bring a friend
Some events allow you to bring a plus one. Find someone whom you feel comfortable with. When you have a friend, you don’t have to force yourself to keep searching for other people to talk to. If you can’t bring a plus one, you need to ask around if someone you know is coming. You can sit next to this person and perhaps take the time to catch up.
Prepare some topics for conversation
Once you start talking to another person during the event, it is easy for you to keep the conversation going. You need a conversation starter, and current events are usually excellent. You need to be sensitive though, especially if you are bringing up a controversial issue. Read about the topic so that you can also contribute to the discussion. You can also ask questions about others, and you might find something in common. After several tries, if you have still found nothing to talk about, you can move on to the next person in the room.
Arrive early
When you arrive late, you will feel conscious because everyone is already talking to each other. It seems like they all know each other, and they are having fun in each other’s company. Arriving early allows you to establish a connection with other people as they come in. You won’t feel conscious because almost no one else is there yet.
Don’t rely on alcohol
Some people get drunk during a party to feel confident. You don’t need to rely on alcohol. It could even make everything worse as you start doing actions that will make others feel uncomfortable. You can survive the party even when you don’t get drunk.
Wear the right outfit
Perhaps, you feel too conscious about what you are wearing, and you can’t move around. You feel like you don’t look great in your outfit. You also think that the clothes are either too loose or too tight. You need to choose from the best made to measure suits if you plan to wear a suit during the event. You can decide every detail of the suit and the tailor will keep making adjustments until it fits you. Therefore, you will feel confident and comfortable as you move around.
You don’t need to feel nervous about formal parties if you follow these tips.
