5 Ways To Look After Yourself Before Surgery

It’s best to get your body in the best place possible (physically speaking) before subjecting it to the stress of going under the knife. Whether your surgery is elective or a requirement for continued well-being in your life, there are actions you can take to make the situation easier.

If you’re looking for a good way to encourage healing inside your body, look to what you can do to boost your natural abilities. Take a moment to read through a brief look at some legitimate ways to prepare your body for surgery.

Eat a healthy diet

Put good things into your body, and expect good things from your body. When you eat a balanced diet, your body has the best chance possible to remain strong through any surgery.

Up your intake of Vitamin C, Vitamin A, and Zinc to boost your body’s natural healing abilities. All of these important dietary elements work together to help encourage collagen production in the body, which will help the skin bounce back from the trauma of surgery.

Stop smoking cigarettes

Smoking damages nearly every part of the human body, and it absolutely doesn’t help if you’re about to go into surgery. Smoking restricts blood vessels and damages the smoker’s heart.

You could suffer heart disease and damage to your lungs, which makes recovering from surgery much more difficult than it would be for a non-smoker. If you choose a competent surgeon for surgery, your surgeon won’t operate unless you quit smoking for at least a small period of time before your surgery.

Stop drinking alcohol

Alcohol can cause several surgical complications. It’s vital that you don’t have a heavy night of drinking before surgery. In fact, you should abstain from drinking alcohol for a couple of weeks before you are scheduled to go under the knife.

Alcohol causes the blood to thin, and you need your body’s ability to clot when a surgeon is working. Alcohol can also cause high blood pressure, which is a recipe for disaster when you’re scheduled for surgery.

Up your protein intake

Protein is a vital part of your regular diet, but it’s even more important when you’re planning to go in for surgery. Protein is commonly known as a muscle builder, but it does much more than that for the body.

Protein is crucial for healing. It helps to build new tissue and restore blood vessels after surgery. Eat high-quality meats before surgery to give your body a better shot at a seamless recovery.

Drink plenty of water

Make sure your body is well-hydrated before going in for surgery. A well-hydrated body is important for surgery, but you typically need to stop fluid intake after midnight the night before your procedure. Drink 6-8 glasses of water every day on a regular basis, and a few hours without fluids won’t make much of a difference to the state of your body.
