Having the right color of paint for the walls of your home can make a huge difference in both the look and feel of your living space. With the wrong color, your rooms can look smaller, darker, and sadder. But with the right colors and color schemes, your home can come to life and give all who enter great energy.
To help you give you home the later rather than the former, here are three tips for picking the right paint colors for inside your home.
Aim For Cohesion
Before you start picking colors or deciding what color scheme you want to go with inside your home, you should first understand what your goal is with the colors you use in your home.
Ideally, every color and design element in your home should complement every other element. Whether this means that everything should harmonize together or offer a visual juxtaposition is up to you. But for the best results, you should aim for cohesion.
To accomplish this, H. Camille Smith and Kathy McCleary, contributors to HGTV, recommend that you start with the more formal rooms or areas of your home. Once you have the right colors in these spaces, you can then move to the rooms out and away from these formal areas by pulling from that original colors scheme. If you pick colors in this way, everything should flow together nicely.
Learn What Colors Can Give You What You Want
As far as the actual colors that you want to be using in your home, the DIY Network advises that you take a long, hard look at the color wheel and learn a bit about what each color means or can do with regards to color psychology.
For example, if you want a room to feel soothing, try using colors that are all in the same shade. Or, if you’re needing to make a space feel bigger or more open, cooler colors can help you achieve this. So before you go out and buy a can of paint, make sure you know what you want the colors of each room to give you.
Do A Test Run First
Once you know which colors you want to paint inside your home, Julia Millay Walsh, a contributor to MyDomaine.com, suggests that you test the paint within your home before you actually paint it all over a wall or the room.
To do this, try painting a large swatch on the wall of the room you think you’ll use that color in. Then, over the next few days, watch how that swatch looks in different light and with the other decor in the space. If you love it, then go ahead and finish painting. But if you hate it, you won’t have to repaint everything.
If you’re wanting to repaint the interior of your home, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you pick the right colors for every room.
